Gerda Susanna Gosepa was chosen from among 17 nominees who were named Unsung Heroes in their respective countries, and whose work was considered for honour by the programme’s regional judging panel. The runners up for the 2012 programme were Mr. Bonti Liverpool of Dominica, and Vincentian, Edward Williams.

Bridgetown, Barbados, May 17, 2012- An important step forward has been taken in the protection of the endangered San Salvador iguana.  The new San Salvador Iguana Conservation Centre was opened recently at the Gerace Research Centre on San Salvador Island in the southern Bahamas, with assistance from CIBC FirstCaribbean.  The Centre will breed and raise the local iguanas until they are large enough to be safely released in selected areas around the island.  At present, only about 500 of these iguanas cling to a precarious existence on tiny offshore cays and small islets in the inland lake.

Three Caribbean islands will get a new year’s gift from CIBC FirstCaribbean in the form of support for endangered environmental projects in their different island communities.

Willemstad, Curaçao, December 15, 2011.

CIBC FirstCaribbean Corporate Investment Banking Curaçao has participated as a lender in a US$ 55 million senior secured credit facility for NuCuraçao Windparken B.V. The project represents a total investment of US$74 million for a 30 MW wind farm in Curaçao. The 30 MW project is slated for commissioning in July, 2012.  The power generated by the plant will represent almost 20% of Curaçao’s annual (energy) demand and will be purchased by Aqualectra.

The Caribbean Regional Energy Forum (CREF), which takes place from October 12 – 14, 2011, will be a convention among the foremost exemplars in the field of energy research and development in this hemisphere.  The conference comes at the time when the region’s leaders continue to grapple with questions of how to fund clean energy sources and reduce the dependence on fossil fuels.  Among the keynote speakers will be Mr. Don Roberts, one of the senior leaders of CIBC, the parent company of CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank.

General Counsel, Ella Hoyos will take up a new post as Managing Director, Human Resources; Managing Director, Operations, Minish Parikh, assumes the role of Chief Administrative Officer, following the retirement of current CAO, Mahes Wickramasinghe. Chief Internal Auditor, Donna Graham, and Managing Director of Technology, Derek Wilson, will also now sit on the bank’s Executive Committee. Executive Chairman, Michael Mansoor, and Chief Executive Officer, Rik Parkhill, made the announcement to employees around the region this morning. The appointments all become effective within the next month.

FirstCaribbean International Bank Limited (“FirstCaribbean”) today announced that it has entered into an agreement with its majority shareholder CIBC Investments (Cayman) Limited, to acquire all of the issued and outstanding shares in CIBC Bank and Trust Company (Cayman) Limited, a Cayman Islands Company  and CIBC Trust Company (Bahamas) Limited, a Bahamian company,  (together the “Acquired Entities”) for a consideration of US$76.8 MM (the “Purchase Price”), subject to regulatory approvals.
